San Giorgio Maggiore

On the little island of San Giorgio Maggiore, the famous architect Andrea Palladio began in 1566 the construction of this church and monastery. The church would not be finished until 1610 by Simone Sorella. The façade was designed by Palladio and built 1607-10,after his death. San Giorgio Maggiore is a perfect counterpart of the San Marco complex on the other side of the Basin.

Love the way you framed it—and the long afternoon shadows too!

This photo just makes my heart sing! We have a photo of San Giorgio Maggiore on our wall from our holiday last year ... and the fellow on the right, we bought one of his pieces for my mother-in-law (I'm sure it was him although I don't see an easel and we made sure to only buy off people that we actually saw creating originals). Thank you for sharing your wonderful photos, they certainly help to keep my new-found love of Venice alive :)

I loved going to mass there...they used to have a gregorian chant mass--it was beautiful. The boat ride there gives you a wonderful prespective of Piazza San Marco.

I love San Giorgio Maggiore! The bell tower is so far superior (IMHO) to San Marco's. So few make the 5 minute trip. Let's keep it a secret!
