The paterae of tiny feet

Our house is a very, very, very fine house
Our House - Graham Nash

I took this photo in October, last year, mainly because of the two paterae. One shows the lion of St Mark 'in moleca' (or 'in mo'eca'), the other shows two lions back-to-back. The house is in Cannaregio.

A Bridge Too Far?

I'm on your side
When times get rough
And friends just can't be found
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

Winding Street

Dear friends and VDP visitors, with this image ends the "spring season" of our Venetian meanderings. "I'm leaving on a jet plane" for another country that I love and from which I'll send you a postcard within some days, as I did last year. I wish all of you a splendid summer!

A Theatrical Show

All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players: they have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his time plays many parts, his acts being seven ages.
William Shakespeare

Summer in the City

Hot town, summer in the city
Back of my neck getting dirty and gritty
Been down, isn't it a pity
Doesn't seem to be a shadow in the city

All around, people looking half dead
Walking on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head

Venetian Pantheon

And in the entrance hall of yesterday's Loredan Palace are displayed statues of some renowned Venetians of the past, most of them writers, architects (Palladio), painters or musicians...

War Memorial

My subject is War, and the pity of War. The Poetry is in the pity.
Wilfred Owen

Here is a memorial that is certainly not off the beaten track. If you've been to Venice, you must have walked past it. But did you see it? It is signed GNO ROSSI. There was a painter called Gino Rossi around that time, but I don't know if he would be the same man. The figure seems to be holding an oil lamp in her right hand, but I don't know what she's doing with her left hand. Any information gratefully received.

This little piggy went to market, ...

This Madonna and Child is a little bit off the beaten track in Cannaregio. Let's say I gave you a clue to the name of the street where it can be found.
Is there a French equivalent to 'This little piggy went to market', Pierre?

Ivy Green

OH, a dainty plant is the Ivy green,
That creepeth o’er ruins old!
Of right choice food are his meals I ween,
In his cell so lone and cold.
The wall must be crumbled, the stone decayed,
To pleasure his dainty whim:
And the mouldering dust that years have made
Is a merry meal for him.
Creeping where no life is seen,
A rare old plant is the Ivy green.
Charles Dickens

"No to Nuclear Power"

Italy says "no" to nuclear power. Yesterday, the Italian voters overwhelmingly rejected Berlusconi's plan to revive the nuclear programme, closed in 1987 after the Tchernobyl disaster.

Campo

A long campo, some say one of the most beautiful campi in the city, always busy as it is one of the main routes inside Venice.

Friends 4Ever

Love is like the wild-rose briar;
Friendship is like the holly-tree.
The holly is dark when the rose briar blooms,
But which will bloom most constantly?

Dante Alighieri

« A l'alta fantasia qui mancò possa;
ma già volgeva il mio disio e 'l velle,
sì come rota ch'igualmente è mossa,
l'amor che move il Sole e l'altre stelle. »
Divina Commedia

Minor Venice

Some large campi stay quiet all day long, hardly known by tourists. So remote places far from the hustle and bustle of the historic center, in what is sometimes called the "Minor Venice".

Sior Rioba

At the end of Fondamenta dei Mori on Campo dei Mori, one can see three statues of three silk merchants who lived and worked here more than five centuries ago. In the corner of the house, Sior Antonio Rioba, is represented with this odd iron nose...
