Cross that line and you're a dead pigeon!
There used to be a well here, but it was filled in in the 17th century, according to the inscription. It's on the south side of the Piazza, more or less in front of Florian's. I wonder how many of the millions who walk across the Piazza have noticed it. This is one of the very few things in Venice that I have seen without reading about it first and going to look for it. I was probably looking for tomorrow's photo at the time. From some of the comments on yesterday's photo, I can see that some readers think that my photos are being taken, like Pierre's, on a more or less daily basis more or less now. But this is not the case. I live in England, and I was last in Venice in October 2010. So none of my photos was taken recently, and, so far, none of those that I have posted was taken anywhere near the appropriate date. I did explain all this when I took over. Yesterday's photo was taken on 30th September 2010, and today's was taken on 30 April 2008.

Thanks, Bert. I remember coming across this and wondering what it was. Last time there, I was happy to see that the pigeons are fewer in the piazza (though some folks do still feed them even if it's now verboten).
Amazed that we've never seen - or heard of this inscription. We must have been too busy looking upwards. "Well discovered" - in more ways than one. Even in Venice it pays to keep your eyes on the ground, it seems.Thanks.

There's another reason, unfortunately, to keep your eyes on the ground ;-), as well as up and around.
Bert, Venice is so timeless, it doesn't matter when a photo was taken. It is so lovely to visit a place where the only things that seem to change are the scaffolding and the large advertisements (yuck to both). I too was in Venice in October 2010, weather was mild and blue--such a wonderful time of the year to visit.
I agree with undercover girl! Venice IS timeless..And looking down is fun, too. I grew up in PA,USA, and our electric co. was PEPCO(PA. POWER CO.)somewhere in Venice, probably nearLa Fondamenta Ristorante or La Diana, is a pavement block that says, "PEPCO!"
I still love you, Bert! ;)
I agree - it doesn't matter when you took them - they're beautiful and always one of the first things I look at each day. Keep them coming.

Bert,
Love your photos and the search for sites many of us have not noticed until you "showed" us. Please keep them coming and ignore negative posters.
Hugs

Kay, I have spent so much time in the exact area of Cannaregio that you describe, and never noticed that block. Next time!
It's so difficult to get the tone of voice right in print. I didn't take any of the comments as negative, it was just that two commenters clearly thought that the photo of the Piazza was taken very recently. I also agree that the couple of people in the photo made it a better photo, but I'd still like to get one with no people - just for the uniqueness of it.
I'm still a bit abligocious about posting random photos on VDP. ['abligocious' is a word my Dad used to say when he didn't know the right word. It now means whatever I want it to mean. You will just have to work it out, I'm afraid. I don't know the word I am looking for; there must be one.]
I think the whole point of all the Daily Posts (not just Venice) is that they should be taken very recently, and reflect what's going on in a place at that time. As long as everyone is happy with my random photos (and so far everyone seems to be) I'll carry on till Pierre gets back. I just wanted to correct any misapprehensions.
Perhaps the word I was looking for was 'uneasy'or 'uncomfortable' - as simple as that.
Bert, we love the pictures, you do have an eye for interesting images, garnered with serendipity (how's that for a word?) and with fortuious felicity!!( even better) We knew - you mentioned it from time to time that images were not quite current, but as other posters have said, "Venice is unchanging". It's good for us to find new details to delight the eye and mind in what we think we know. Thanks again. We can't manage without our daily dose of Venice.
To me, "daily" means a photo-a-day, and it doesn't really matter if they're current or not. And I'm really enjoying yours!
I just got a comment on my blog from Andrew in Venice - San Simeon Piccolo IS still behind scaffolding so that coffee commercial must have used some old old footage.
