Last

Each sestiere, apart from one, has a sign like this on the building with the highest, or last, number in that sestiere. You must have seen the one on the side of the Fondaco dei Tedeschi, with the last number in the sestiere of San Marco. The sestiere that doesn't have such a sign (so far as I know) is Dorsoduro. [In white, in case you want to find the answer for yourself.]

The more I think about the way houses are numbered in Venice, the more impressed I am with the folks who have to deliver the mail. This time I'm guessing—is it Cannaregio?

Oh, no, Alexa. You could use ombra to find the highest number in each sestiere. Start with a guess: 4000? - found, 5000? - not found, so next guess 4500 and so on, narrowing it down. Then find the spot with VC and have a look at the building. We've eliminated Cannaregio, San Marco and San Polo, so only three to try.

I believe it's just across this bridge—Ponte san Rocco—in Dorsoduro. (If not, I'll have to try again later because otherwise I may be out of a job!)

I believe that Dorsoduro's is across the Ponte San Rocco from the pictured sign, at #3964, but no money on it - sounds low for a sestiere of that size...

San Marco's is #5562 by the "old" main post office.

EXACTLY, Alexa and Randy. The interesting thing is that the highest number in Dorsoduro is opposite the highest number in San Polo. This is also the case with the highest numbers in Cannaregio and Castello.

Of course! Ponte delle Erbe!
Castello 6828 and Cannaregio 6423.
Too many trips to Zanipaolo that way to not remember!

The last number in Santa Croce is recorded as 2347B (across the Ponte Giovanni Andrea della Corce o della Malvasia from Campo San Cassiano in San Polo).

However, is it really San Polo 2359-01 -- a building in Santa Croce, but accessible only across a private bridge from Ponte della Chiesa in San Polo? Hmmm.
