Yacht on the Zaterre

Most of the yachts moored in Venice are not of the better taste. This one for a change is somehow different, old style, not too big, nice design... It's Johnny Depp's!

Night on the Canal

The Grand Canal (Italian : Canal Grande, Venetian : Canalasso/Canalazzo) curves along the very heart of Venice. It is indeed the geographical as well as the symbolic center of the city, and to everyone being along its banks it gives the sensation of being in a unique landscape.

San Lorenzo

Fondalenta de l'Osmarin, not far from San Giorgio dei Greci (Castello), on a house, is this large relief of San Lorenzo (Lawrence of Rome). The saint is here represented (he often is) with the grill on which he was marthired around year 258.

Squero della Sensa

I's an old Venetian "squero", some say one of the oldest shipyards in the City. Nobody knows if it will survive long. I've heard that its fate could be sealed yet.
Maybe some erudite visitor or friend of this blog could enlighten us about it..

Bartolomeo Colleoni

Meet Bartolomeo Colleoni (1400-1475), military commander of the Republic and a great war leader. The statue was made by Andrea Verrocchio (1435-1488), prominent Florentine sculptor. The statue is displayed on a very high piedestal.
Here is the story that I've heard about this statue : Colleoni, very rich and at the end of his life, wanted to bequeath his fortune to Venice, provided a statue of him was erected "in front of San Marco". The Doge had to deny such a conceited request. But he finally got the huge leg by placing the statue not in front of "Basilica" San Marco, but in front of of the "scuola" di San Marco - which yet remains a wonderful place - on campo San Giovanni e Paolo in the Castello Sestiere. Riva del Vin

White swan of cities slumbering in thy nest . . .
White phantom city, whose untrodden streets
Are rivers, and whose pavements are the shifting
Shadows of the palaces and strips of sky.

This canal named Rio della Pieta starts on the right of La Pieta Church, on the Riva degli Schiavoni, runs along the Scuola di San Giorgio, becomes then Rio di San Lorenzo and comes out on the Fondamente Nove. Crossing Castello from North to South, it's mainly used for freight traffic and knows a significant activity.

The balustrade which surrounds Sansovino's Logetta is closed by a bronze gate, open during the day. When it's closed, i's possible to admire this work by Antonio Gai in 1737.

My most faithful visitors on this blog know that, besides Venice, I’ve a passion for the USA, passion that I develop in my USA-Decouverte.com website, whose Version 3 has been released at the beginning of April. I know that most of you are Americans and/or are great travelers. If you happen to have beautiful photos from the United States, I’d be delighted if you post some of them on USA-Decouverte’s Users Pictures Gallery. As the site is in French, if you have some difficulties, just mail me - mail is in my profile - some pics and captions and I’ll post them for you with your User’s name and translated caption. Thanks ;-)
