Libreria Acqua Alta

The famous Venetian "Libreria Acqua Alta" is one of the most original book shops in the world, with its true gondola in the center, to display books on.
What you see on this picture is just the back of the shop, where are displayed comics and old books. Those days, the book shop fully deserves its name! And from time to time, the bookseller, Luigi Frizzo, comes here, in the back, to throw visiting fishes some breadcrumbs.

c'est vrai qu'elle est sympathique cette librairie...
avec aussi tous les chats qui dorment sur les livres...

I guess we'd need tall rubber boots to look at books in that store, non?

Browsing at this bookstore would be unlike any experience I've had thus far.

When I saw your photo yesterday, I wondered if the water gets into the shops and homes. Now I know! This has to be very hard on floors and furniture and whatever else is in the way.

I believe this place is on the Calle Lunga Santa Maria Formosa, yes? And this is the Uscita di Sicurezza, or Fire Exit! Not much chance of a fire these days, is there? Yesterday, before I left Venice, I heard the aqua alta sirens. A Venetian woman on the plane said there was even water in Campo Santa Margherita—hope you were still able to get your spritz, Pierre!

Thank you, that has to be the most interesting book shop in the universe! (Now someone may challenge that bold statement.)

We were in this bookstore last December. Before the acqua alta the gondola and the bath tubs used to display the books seemed quaint, if a bit eccentric. Once the water rose, it all made sense. A place like no other.

When I think of what all that humidity is doing to the books, I want to weep.

This place looks magical and lovely, but water that close to so many books makes me nervous. :)

Gorgeous image.

But my heart goes out to the shop owners. It hurts me to see books damaged.
