Molino Stucky

A massive building on the Giudecca island, facing the Giudecca canal and the Dorsoduro. It used to be a flour mill. Built in 1895 by the Swiss Giovanni Stucky, it closed in 1955 after a history of economic crisis for the company. The "molino" is now a luxurious hotel, the Hilton Molino Stucky Venice.

The architect, according to my Blue Guide, was Ernst Wullekopf (1858-1927). The conversion to a Hilton hotel was set back by a fire in 2003. There are plans to build a tunnel under the Giudecca Canal from the hotel to the west end of Venice.

Interesting history. I know I've commented on your Mark Twain quote before, but it haunts me every time I visit your site - my eyes always catch it and I get to thinking!

A tunnel under the Giudecca Canal, really? I didn't realize Venice wanted to make things quite that convenient for the tourists. Someone told me that there's a great rooftop bar in this hotel (I guess you'd go for the romantic view).
