San Lorenzo
Fondalenta de l'Osmarin, not far from San Giorgio dei Greci (Castello), on a house, is this large relief of San Lorenzo (Lawrence of Rome). The saint is here represented (he often is) with the grill on which he was marthired around year 258.
I've been thinking of him lately (when I burned my leg stomping out a grass fire). I think he should have gotten away. What mad men would do something like that to another man?
And he's shown with a chalice because he was martyred when he wouldn't turn the church's treasures (which included the Holy Grail) over to the prefect of Rome. I love it when you show us these kinds of details, Pierre—so easy to miss when you're there and trying to take in the overall beauty of Venice.

Thanks for remembering San Lorenzo!
He sure looks happy for someone who is about to be grilled. Ouch.
Really nice relief sculpture.
