Doge's Palace

Heart of the city, the Doge's Palace dates from around year 810. By this time it was nothing more than a stronghold with high walls and defensive towers. The palace as we can admire it nowadays, is the result of a long series of unfortunate events, as fires, and of various reconstructions and improvements...

It looks like each pillar has highly individual carvings on top (don't know the technical terms, tho). Great photo.

It is interesting to note how the decoration at the top of each column is different, as are the capitals!

You can spend a whole day, circling each column and studying the capitals. Some are original, some not. But they're fascinating.

Detail on top of detail—I could look at these columns for hours. Your shot captures them beautifully, Pierre!
(Glad to see that the spikes are effective in keeping the pigeons away.)

Each capital is different, and they're all interesting. It's also interesting that if you go the Venetian resort in Las Vegas, and look at their "version," they appear to have made casts of the real ones (how did they get permission to do that??) -- but not all, just about six, I think (which repeat in sequence).
