Night walk in the Cannagegio

It's rainy, it's midnight... but I like to walk alone, along the straight Cannaregio canals, on the deserted banks, on the silent streeets, and observe the special features of houses and palaces.

Relief on Sansovino Loggetta

At the base of the Campanile, on its east side, is a delicate construction, work of Jacopo Sansovino (1486-1570). Architect, Sansovino is also a sculptor, and the author of the large reliefs decorating the logetta's pediment.

Chiesa dei Gesuati

On the banks of the Dorsoduro Sestiere (le Zaterre) Santa Maria del Rosario, also called la Chiesa dei Gesuati, has been built in 1724 by Giorgio Massari for the Dominican Order. It's in particular famous for its ceiling painted by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo.

Night on the Piazzetta

Cafe Chioggia is closed, the Piazzetta is almost empty. Barely some night birds, whose shadows are fading in the distance, keep on walking and cheerfully chatting in spite of the drizzly weather and the coldness of the night.

Procuratie Vecchie

The first Procuraties, at the north of the Piazza san Marco, were build by Mauro Codussi from 1514, and completed by Bartolomeo Bon in 1590. They have been called Procuratie vecchie (old procuraties) after the construction of the New Procuraties at the south of the Piazza. This building was intended to provide accommodation for the Procurators of San Marco, leading dignitaries in charge of the church possessions.

Baretton Alimentari

Baretton Alimentari, a local grocery shop in the Cannaregio, with its welcoming and smiling shopkeeper. A good place to buy some little Venetian and italian treats. Where is it? On Cannaregio 5242, on the Salizzada S.Canciano. You'll easily come across the shop while walking from San Giovanni Crisotomo to Miracoli church. Well, here is the map.

Ambulance blues

I guess I'll call it sickness gone
It's hard to say the meaning of this song.
An ambulance can only go so fast
It's easy to get buried in the past
When you try to make a good thing last.

Basilica San Marco

Pinnacles, little stepples, figures, erected spires, marble-statues, balustrades, poles, onion-domes... Basilica San Marco is a real heaping up of phantasmagoric architectural elements.

The 4th Bridge

There used to be, as you probably know, three bridges on the Grand Canal : the Scalzi bridge, the Rialto (the oldest and only one for centuries) and the wooden Academia bridge. This new glass and stone arch, called Calatrava bridge (after its architect) or the 4th bridge, has for official name Constitution Bridge (Ponte della Constituzione). Opened in September 2008, it spans the Grand Canal from Piazzale di Roma to Santa Lucia train station.

San Trovaso

In a quiet area of the Dorsoduro Sestiere, San Trovaso stands between a large campo and the Rio di San Trovaso, right behind the Squero (shipyard). The church was rebuilt in 1570, after a great blaze that burned the former one to the ground.

San Nicolo dei Mendicoli

In the extreme west of the Dorsoduro, San Nicolo dei Mendicoli is one of the oldest churches in Venice. Built in the 12th century, it was later renovated, in 1361 and 1580.

Early commuters boats

As it is in many big cities, a lot of people live in the outskirts and commute every morning and evening. In Venice, the cost of living is higher, and the city is not so convenient for families. So most of them live outside Venice, on the edge of the Lagoon, as in Mestre, Marghera, the Lido, Cavallino or Jesolo.

Bikes

A bike is something very uncommon in Venice and on the Lagoon. Well, but here we are (as I'm sure you have guessed) in Burano. A tiny island yet, so tiny that you couldn't ride your bike more than one minute in any direction (riding slow). My only guess : the owner must work in the Lido, and he takes his bike with him on the boat every morning...

Glass Sculpture in Murano

Half-human, half-alien... A glass sculpture in a little Piazza in Murano, maybe to remember visitors that Murano is the Island of the glass...
