Venice, by Bernardo Bellotto, at the Getty Center

Seen yesterday in the magical Getty Center in Los Angeles... A view of the Grand Canal : Santa Maria della Salute and the Dogana from Campo Santa Maria Zobenigo. About 1740. An oil on canvas, by the italian artist Bernardo Bellotto (1722-1780) who produced numerous views of Venice for the tourists stopping there on their "Grand Tour" of Europe.

Leif is absolutely correct. I am always fascinated by the frames that are chosen to encase the paintings in many museums. This one seems appropriate for the subject.

Northern European tourists to Venice once bought Canalettos almost like modern people buy postcards (although the latter are in decline due to digital cameras and e-mail). The Getty is a magical place. I'm sure you enjoyed your visit.

I love the Getty. Its only a few miles from here and yet I only go every few years.

The garden alone is worth the trip.

How nice that you visited the Getty while you're in LA. And thanks for sending us this fabulous "postcard."
