Contarini del Bovolo stairs
This palace, interesting for its incredible outside spiral staircase, is almost hidden in the San Marco Sestiere, some steps from la Riva del Carbon. Cross the little Campo Luca, then the Campo Manin, and you're almost there. Take then the extremely narrow street (it's indicated) and you will discover the beautiful architecture of this palace built at the end of the 15th century by the rich Contarini family. The word "Bovolo" meaning "snail" in Venetian dialect, defines the helicoïdal shape of this famous staircase.
Ce palais, doté d'une incroyable cage d'escalier extérieure à l'architecture hélicoïdale, est presque caché au coeur du quartier de San Marco, à quelques pas de la Riva del Carbon. Traversez le petit Campo Luca, puis le Campo Manin, et vous y êtes presque. Empruntez alors le rue très étroite qui part du Campo Manin (c'est indiqué) et vous découvrirez la magnifique architecture de ce palais construit à la fin du 15e siècle par la riche famille Contarini. Le nom de "Bovolo", qui signifie "escargot" en dialecte vénitien, définit la forme en spirale de ce célèbre escalier.
Right behind Santa Maria dei Frari, in San Polo sestiere, you will find the Campo di San Rocco, with this typical baroque church built between 1489 and 1508 by Bartolomeo Bon, and (on the left) la Scuola Grande di san Rocco, famous for its numerous Tintoretto paintings. A nice place surrounded by great pices of architecture, where people like to gather at the end of the day, and sit on the steps, listening to some musicians, in the cold evening air.
A deux pas Santa Maria dei Frari, dans le quartier de San Polo, vous trouverez le Campo di San Rocco, avec son église baroque, construite par Bartolomeo Bon entre 1489 et 1508 et (à gauche) la Scuola Grande di San Rocco, célèbre pour ses nombreuses peintures du Tintoret. Une place avec pour écrin cette magnifique architecture, et dans laquelle on aime à se promener lorsque la ville redevient calme, s'asseoir sur les marches et écouter jouer des musiciens dans l'air frais de la nuit vénitienne.

On an outside wall of the Fondaco dei Turchi (other pics), I've seen this discreet (large as a plate) and highly situated bas relief depicting this odd subject. I couldn't tell what is the meaning. Maybe some old tale... Does-it remember you something?
A quiet and silent moment in San Polo Sestiere. Even the most visited cities keep their quiet places. No great or famous monuments in these areas, but that's certainely where you'll find the very soul of a city. Venise is rich of these genuine places, that I'm particularly fond of, and where you can sometimes feel being almost alone, hearing the echoes of your footsteps as you cross a forgotten bridge.
Calme et tranquilité dans le Sestiere de San Polo. Même les villes les plus fréquetées par les touristes gardent leurs endroits tranquiles, à l'écart de l'agitation du centre. Loin des monuments qui en font la gloire, vous trouverez certainement en ces lieux l'âme véritable de la cité.
A quiet moment on the very heart of Venice, at the tip of the Piazzetta early in the morning, when you just hear the low voice of some early birds, and the lapping of the gondolas on St Mark's basin.

Cruise ships sometimes cross St Mark's Basin, early in the morning, on their way to the the maritime station, via the Giudecca Canal, giving venician skyline a different shape.
Des bateaux de croisière traversent parfois le Bassin de Saint Marc, tôt le matin, pour se rendre à la Gare Maritime, donnant ainsi une forme nouvelle à l'horizon vénitien.
CampoSanta Margherita, north of the Dorsoduro, is one of the most animated places in the city. Venitian, mostly students and young families, like to come here to catch some afternoon sun, and sit on a terrace for a drink, an ice-cream or a slice of pizza.
Le Campo Santa Margherita, au nord du Dorsoduro, est l'une des places les plus animés de la ville. Les Vénitiens, majoritairement des étudiants et des jeunes familles, aiment s'y retrouver pour profiter des derniers rayons de soleil et s'asseoir à une terrasse pour boire un verre, déguster une glace ou dévorer une pointe de pizza.
The north of the Cannaregio sestiere, crossed over by long and straights canals, is a spot which is sadly little known to tourists. It's however rich of some palaces, as the Mastelli Palace (which its engraved dromedary on the façade), Tintoretto's house and the Campo dei Mori. But the main monument in this part of town is La Madona dell'Orto (La madona of the Garden), named this way because it hosts a large statue of the Virgen, found il 1377 in a nearby garden.
Traversé par des canaux longs et rectilignes, le nord du Cannaregio est assez peu connu des toutistes. Il est pourtant riche de quelques palais, comme le palais Mastelli (avec son bas-relief en façade représentant un dromadaire), de la maison du Tintoret, et du Campo dei Mori. Mais le monument principal en est la Madona dell'Orto (la Madone du Jardin), ainsi nommée parce qu'elle abrite une grande statue de la Vierge, découverte en 1377 dans un jardin voisin.
